Forward Deployed Engineer Guide: The 4-Step ChatGPT Workflow and 4 Resume Samples
ChatGPT won’t take your job. An FDE who uses it will.
AI tools are changing how engineers work. The people who benefit most are not the ones who copy answers blindly. They are the ones who use AI to move faster while still checking, testing and explaining every result. Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) work this way every day.
This free guide from Incrito breaks the FDE workflow into four clear steps. Each step comes with a real-style example, a prompt you can copy, and a checklist. The guide also includes four sample resumes and a 7-day plan so you can build one FDE-style project and add it to your resume.
What is a Forward Deployed Engineer?
A Forward Deployed Engineer works directly with a client, understands their messy real-world problem, and builds and ships a working solution using code, data and AI tools. The title was popularised by Palantir, and many AI, data and enterprise software companies now hire for similar roles, because customers need working solutions, not just products.
An FDE sits between a software engineer and a consultant. Like a software engineer, they write code. Like a consultant, they talk to clients, understand business needs and explain results in plain language.
Who this guide is for
- Final-year students and freshers interested in client-facing engineering roles
- Python developers who want to work closer to customers
- Data analysts moving into engineering and automation
- Implementation, support or solutions engineers aiming for FDE-style roles
- Anyone curious how to use ChatGPT responsibly at work
The 4-step FDE workflow
Step 1: Understand the client’s problem
Clients rarely hand you a clear problem. A request such as “our deliveries are late” is a complaint, not a problem statement. The guide shows how to use ChatGPT to ask better questions, list assumptions and draft a problem statement with a success metric, for example “reduce late deliveries in Bengaluru from 18% to 10% in 90 days.” You get a weak vs strong prompt comparison and a list of questions to confirm with the client.
Step 2: Share sample data, never sensitive data
Working with client data requires care. The guide includes a simple table of what is safe to share (column names, masked sample rows, error messages without secrets) and what must never be shared (names, phone numbers, ID numbers, bank details, passwords, raw production exports). You also get a masking example that turns real-looking details into safe placeholders, plus a prompt that asks ChatGPT for a step-by-step cleaning plan. Always follow the client’s data policy and use only approved tools.
Step 3: Generate code, test it and fix errors
ChatGPT can draft code quickly, but the draft is only the start. The guide gives you a testing checklist: run on the sample first, check empty values and duplicates, compare row counts before and after, test a small case where you know the answer, and read every line before it touches client data. A worked example shows how a KeyError caused by a trailing space in a column name is found and fixed.
Step 4: Explain the solution in simple language
A correct solution is not useful if the client cannot act on it. The guide shows a technical explanation next to a clear one, and gives a 5-part template: problem, finding, meaning, recommendation and what you need from the client. A prompt helps you turn a technical result into five plain sentences for a non-technical manager.
Where the FDE’s judgment matters
ChatGPT gives the draft. The FDE brings the judgment. The guide explains where AI helps (drafting code, suggesting cleaning steps, explaining clearly) and where you must decide (checking correctness, choosing rules that fit the client, verifying facts and numbers, applying context). You also learn the red flags to catch: functions that do not exist, silent assumptions about the data, and totals that do not match the source.
Skills and projects that get FDE interviews
Skills to build, in order: Python and Pandas, SQL, APIs and JSON, Git and testing, basic cloud, and explaining results to non-technical people. The guide also lists four project ideas with the proof to show for each, such as a cleaned public dataset with a dashboard and one-page summary, a small API that cleans CSV files, and an LLM-based classifier with accuracy checked on 100 samples.
4 FDE sample resumes
- Fresher (B.Tech): client-style projects with numbers, honest AI use and a human check
- Python Developer (1.5 years): direct client work, ETL scripts and client runbooks
- Data Analyst (2 years): automation, data cleaning at scale and a hand-checked accuracy number
- Implementation Engineer (2 years): customer go-lives, data migration and API integrations
Each resume has numbered notes that explain what a hiring manager notices. All four are fictional samples. Use them as a structure and replace every detail with your own true information.
Your 7-day FDE project plan
- Day 1: pick a messy public dataset and a made-up client problem
- Day 2: use ChatGPT to write a problem statement and clarifying questions
- Day 3: mask a 20-row sample and get a cleaning plan
- Day 4: generate code, write tests and fix errors
- Day 5: build a dashboard and a plain-language summary
- Day 6: write a README and record a 3-minute demo
- Day 7: update your resume and send 5 referral messages
